proof read handouts?
Feb. 14th, 2008 07:53 amSo I am working on a series of flyers and handouts to go with my open house.
Not sure if I can email it out (as I use a really old wordprocessing program - It's old -Lotus- & came with my first computer - but I love it. It does great footnotes.)
But I am going to post the meat of it here behind the cut and welcome any suggestions - grammar, punctuation, content etc.
This one is a little tri-fold handout with class information.
What do I need for class?
ATTITUDE! If you are reading this - you're already 90% there.
Footwear.
Bellydance is traditionally performed barefoot, although nightclub performers often wear heels or ballroom shoes. For classes I recommend slippers, dance shoes, ballet shoes or socks - if you have a foot issues you can try dancing in running shoes but you may have difficulty with some of the pointed toe or up on ball movements.
Clothing.
Any exercise type clothing is fine.
Pants- Yoga pants, sweat pants, leggings, shorts but not skirts (As your instructor it helps me to be able to see what your legs and knees are doing so that I know if you are doing a move correctly.) Jeans are not recommended because as stretchy as your jeans are - they can still constrict your movements.
Shirts -It is generally a better idea to wear a form fitting shirt so that you can better isolate your upper body movements - but really any t-shirt would be fine.
Do I need a hip scarf?
If you have one, or you want to wear one - Awesome! Many of my students have them, others don't. It's a matter of personal choice.
It certainly adds to the fun. Some instructors don't like hip scarves with beads or coins, because they make a lot of noise and it is difficult to talk over them. If they start shedding coins or beads, these can become a floor hazard. There are a few places in Windsor where they are available, or you can try eBay/online shopping. Occasionally I do offer them for sale.
But I don't want to show my belly.
... you certainly don't have to show your belly. After you've been dancing for a while you may find that you want to see what your muscles are doing (especially if you practice in front of a mirror.) But you need never show your belly if you don't want to. In fact, there are many beautiful performance costumes that don't expose the abdomen at all. Or you can get 'power mesh' body suits that you allow you to cover your abdomen but stillwear the exposed abdomen setsgive the illusion of an exposed abdomen. That's if you want to get into performing.
But bellydance is like stripping? right?
NO! Not at all. This dance is an expression of whatever you put into it. It certainly isn't about taking off your clothes. What you do in the privacy of your own home is your business. I'm teaching movements that increase your awareness of your own body - what you do with that is up to you.
Will bellydance help me lose weight?
Sure, any physical activity done regularly, several times a week will increase the number of calories burned. Bellydance will also help you celebrate your curves and find muscles you never knew you had.
I'm too old/young.
No one is too old for bellydance. Traditionally Bellydance is performed by everyone; men, women, children and grandparents. At this time my classes are limited to those students over 16 years of age. Children benefit greatly from other dance forms and there are many classes out there that cater to younger age groups. Let's have something for us.

About the instructor:
I started just like you. Saw an advertisement for a class and thought it sounded like fun. I was hooked from Day One! Since then I've been taking lessons off and on for over 10 years. I continue to take classes with as many instructors as I can. I've been teaching in Essex since January 2006. Bellydance has become a passion for me and there is nothing as enjoyable as being able to share something you love with others.
I hope to see you soon. -A. *

*I'm not sure if I should put my name on it... I still haven't chosen a dance name but don't really want to use my real name.

Date: 2008-02-21 06:27 pm (UTC)I still want to catch the students who want something that will make them feel sexy but ... I'm not sure how to say - empower yourself, get in touch with your femininity
I'd welcome suggestions.
