Backdrop: Well, find a nice wall for a back-drop, for one. Then use those utility lights on stands (I'll give you a link if you need) and point them somewhat upward and/or against a white background opposite of where you're taking the photo. If you have larger, higher standing lights, you can drape a white, lightweight (very sheer) fabric over them to soften the effect. Always do trial shoots before the final photo session. Check the White Balance settings on the camera. Learn to use Photoshop or something similar. If the camera has ISO settings, play with those to get right depth of field you're looking for. Also, Photobucket and some other photo sites have editing software included with a paid account. On hiring a photographer, ask to see some of their *recent* work and inquire how much they charge and if it's by the hour or by the number of prints, etc. Be aware that signing a model's release protects the photographer and they then have license to use those photos any way they choose.
