Good discussion topics?

I am trying to  make a list of good discussion topics for 12-13 year old girls

Stuff that makes them think...but not too controversial.

They are a rowdy bunch and we are hoping that we can come up with a way to direct the conversation because it keeps degenerating into

I hate *blank* so much
I hate so & so.
So & so stole my.....

I'm making a list but... if you can come up with stuff to add....(or if you can google me a list ? that would be great too!)

What do you think life will be like 100 years from now?
If you could time travel where would go go & why? How long would you be gone?

http://www.thesource4ym.com/outreach/topic.asp?ID=108 is a start.

There are entire books on this subject. I picked one up a garage sale once for 50 cents.

thanks - that's a great list.

books? what would you suggest I look under. I keep getting - books titled

"how to talk to your kids about sex?"

.........
the problem is some of these girls are going out of their way to be downright MEAN to each other.

it's - horrible.

(makes me glad I don't have any.)

I can't find either book at the moment.

I bought one years ago titled something like 101 Great Questions or 101 Small Group openers. The one I got from the garage sale was something like 101 Conversation Starters.

Neither book was aimed at teenagers. They were mostly for adult groups to have ice breaker questions. (Most of them still work for tweens and teens - you might have to leave some out.)

Most of the stuff I use comes from books. This is some stuff I used at a youth retreat last August:

1. What did you spend most of the summer doing?

2. What was the coolest/best thing that happened to you all summer?

3. What was the strangest thing that happened to you all summer?

4. One think I would have changed about my summer is ____________.

Fall

1. What is the class you are most looking forward to at school?

2. What is one thing you want to do differently this fall over last school year?

3. What is the after-school or out-of-school activity you are most looking forward to?

4. What is one thing you hope our group does this fall?

5. What is one thing you wish we would learn about or study?

The Best

1. What was one of the best vacations you ever had? Why?

2. What was one of the best birthdays you ever had? Why?

3. What was one of the best Christmas you ever had? Why?

4. What was one of the best experiences you ever had? Why?

5. What was one of the best presents you ever received? Why?

6. What was one of the best times you had in athletics or with a hobby? Why?

7. What was one of the best family times you ever had? Why?
