Almost every cat I've had has been at least somewhat freaked out by fireworks, thunder, and the all-frightening vacuum cleaner (except my first cat who was all white and deaf). I had a tabby cat years ago, Lucky, who was attacked by a dog when he was a kitten. He could sense a dog outside from at least 50 feet away, even with all the doors closed. He'd growl and raise his hackles and sometimes start shaking and nearly salivating, like he couldn't decide if he wanted to kill it or was just scared to death of it. Never got over it.
There's probably no way to keep people from shooting off fireworks, unfortunately. :\
