This is just my thinking, but I think a sad piece would be appropriate for an audience of other bellydancers, because they get it. I don't know if I'd suggest it for a Humane Society Benefit, though. People go to benefits to feel good about themselves. Seeing a sad dance, especially one performed in a dance style that they might not understand, may very well make people uncomfortable.
That said, I am all for dancing to it for your own enjoyment. We dance because we are moved by the music! If an opportunity comes up for you to share it, all the better.
