(no subject)

I find my life is much happier if I boycott Facebook.

too bad I use it to notify students of upcoming classes and events.

But I'd still prefer to sever it permanently from my life.

What happened?

[identity profile] dancingleaf.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
nothing -

It just all seems so fake or whiney or blah.

Unfortunately - I have this friend that has no working email - believe it or not, and Facebook is the only way I can leave messages for her. (or I can phone her but she's even less reliable by phone)

Yeah you want to avoid fake. If you want REAL whiny and blah, stick with LJ

[identity profile] dancingleaf.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly.

I want REAL. and something more than... what is it... 100 characters or less?

and a somewhat more limited platform of sharing - not lets shout it from the rooftops -

oh woe is me - my daughter needs glasses!

But people do that all the time. They've probably never had a blog or anything online that allows for longer updates so they keep it short. It's funny, too. Often those are the posts that get a lot of replies, because we can all relate to something that concise and most of us don't have a lot of time to read paragraph after paragraph (short attention spans, too!).

I think people like FB because it's convenient, but it also has serious privacy problems. When something new comes along, just watch. They'll dump FB and move on to the New and Shiny, like sheep, baaaaaaa.

I hate FB. I hate it for the interface. It's so messy. I hate how I can't find messages and I can't edit something after the fact.

Plus, the signal to noise ratio is terrible. It's easy to miss something significant.

100% agree.

I forgot about that - you can learn that so and so had soup for lunch but miss that someone else is in the hospital.

Oh, and my biggest complaint is the lack of threaded conversations.

and I'm really tired of getting event invitations that are in Phoenix or New York.

which in turn makes me want to treat all that Facebook stuff like spam - which makes me even more reluctant to send out invites to my OWN events... etc.
