I got the sewing machine blues......

my sewing machine is unhappy.

I took it apart and oiled it last night.

readjusted the tensions

I've been meaning to replace the needle plate & bobbin cover - so I emailed the local place to see if/when/how much.

I think it might just be bad thread though....

oh well - I'm going to change this barely used new needle out for a different new one and see if that makes a difference.

but it isn't like I'm working on anything important ...........just plain cotton bags for the dancers to store their fans in.

What's wrong with it? If the thread keeps breaking, yes, it could be bad thread. I had that happen to me awhile back. I didn't want to have to give in and buy the expensive thread (I use Gutterman, but only when it's on sale!), but it's been so much better.

Yes the top thread keeps breaking. I recently inherited a sewing machine cabinet and in it was a bunch of spools of thread .... so I thought I'd use them up.

It started skipping stitches, so I oiled & cleaned it & now the thread is breaking so.... I'm thinking thread.

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet it's the thread - that's the same thing that was happening to me. The sewing place told me that cheap thread, even if it feels smooth to you, can have bumps that will cause it to hang up in the sewing machine, which then causes it to break. I kept the crappy thread, but now it has a sticker on it that says 'hand sewing only'.
