Stupid bothers us more than it should because we devote too much time and energy to trying to make it make sense. It throws you (how do you respond to "it could cause accidents", other than maybe "if you can't swerve around me when walking, maybe you're walking too fast? Have you thought about slowing down? I know there's no walking speed limit, but it seems "safe and prudent" would apply here, and I challenge you to argue that if you couldn't move in the time you saw me to avoid a collision, you were traveling WAY to fast" which has the added benefit of confusing them because you're babbling like a loon!) and that can upset you more than what was said.
It's kind of like dealing with my mom, my aunt and I have a saying - "can't make sense out of crazy". You'll drive yourself crazy trying to rationalize it, you do have to just let it go.
That guy was just weird. It would never cross my mind to remark about what side of a path a person was on, as long as they weren't darting back and forth as I was approaching them!
