I just had blood tests, including cholesterol, a few weeks back. They told me just no food for 12 hours; water was okay. Years ago I had tests and I was dehydrated, and yeah, like you say, it was almost a nightmare to get some blood out of me.
With surgery, they might not care as much. They probably just want to avoid cleaning up urine, but there's always a catheter for that! (Oh, yay.)
I don't like skipping breakfast, either. I hate that I have to take thyroid medication first thing in the a.m. and then wait an hour to eat. I almost want to start taking it at bedtime instead because I'm so hungry in the morning!
