I have an important to me, upcoming performance - about a month away. I've picked my song and have been playing with it - every time I hear it I love it even more - so I'm pleased - (I usually start to hate a song 3/4 of the way through the creative process) The song is ... a little on the dark side, with a slightly vaudeville sound to it - I'm aiming at a sort of tribal fusion/slightly gothic, bellydancer does Moulin Rouge look I suppose.
But I'm having trouble with planning the costuming. Obviously I only have time to create ONE costume.
I am planning a variation on lace ruffle pants - with a big overskirt - hiked up in front - long in the back. Haven't decided on the top design at all yet BECAUSE I can't settle on the COLOURS for the bottom half.
Now... most of the time I've seen these ruffle pants done in white on white. BUT... I wanted to do something different, unfortunately the widest (coloured) lace I can find is a measly 6" or I can get tons & tons of white in the width that I want about 10-12" (cafe curtains).
I could try dying it but given the fabric composition I don't think it will take the dye well.
I don't have time to order something in.
I could cut my own lace panels out of fabric which would be lots and lots of work -all that finishing the edges before it would be ready to sew to the pants.
I initially thought I would do red on red lace pants with a black overskirt,
then when I couldn't find any lace in any colour other than white... I thought maybe white over cream? white over gold?
I had previously bought the black lace fabric for the overskirt because it was just so beautiful I couldn't resist it. And ... I can't believe I'm actually thinking about cutting it into panels and doing a black over red for the pants. Then I get to thinking this will make the look too uniform in colour if I went ahead with the black and/or red skirt - so then skirt colour? - which leaves me back to white on white for the pants and black on red for the skirt...
Yes white on white for the pants would make them a more versatile part of my wardrobe.
But I don't want this costume to look like a copy of a popular look. I really do want to put my own spin on it.
So now I am stuck - unable to move forward because I can't make a decision as to what colours I want & where.
Black on cream looks pretty spectacular too.
I'd welcome your input & assistance because I'm stuck and I need to make a decision! Your ideas are greatly appreciated.
Maybe I'll head out to another fabric store and look at their red lace fabric. I just wanted to have my colours set before I buy more fabric.
