I'm always on the look out for a good song -

hahaha.  no really.

I'm always on the look out for a good song that I can use in general public performances.  Outdoor shows mostly that will draw the average audience in and tell them that bellydance is not just music they don't recognize.  Just put in one song that they recognize and the audience relaxes, smiles, claps along and joins in a lot more than if you only play stuff they'll never recognize unless they are into bellydance themselves.

Last summer I did the choreo to Shake Rattle and Roll and  it got a really good reception.

[livejournal.com profile] sacramentalist  suggested our next number should be Motown and I've been really trying to find something.

I think Aretha Franklin's Respect might be the right choice.

what do you think?   other suggestions?

head's up  - "Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole lot a shaking going on"   was not appropriate. - or at least not the version I got.

Respect lyrics
Songwriters: Redding, Otis;

What you want, baby, I got it
What's you need? You know I got it
All I'm askin' is for a little respect when you get home
Hey baby, when you get home, mister

I ain't gonna do you wrong while you're gone
I ain't gonna do you wrong because I don't wanna
All I'm askin' is for a little respect when you get home
Hey baby, when you get home, listen

I'm about to give all of my money
And all I'm askin' in return, honey
You give me my profits when you get there
Yeah baby, when you get home, oh, yeah, ooh

Your kiss is sweeter than honey
Guess what? So here's my money
All I need is just a little respect when you get home
Baby, when you get home
[Incomprehensible] on me

R E S P E C T
Find out what it means to me
R E S P E C T
Take care, T C B

Oh, a little respect
Yeah, baby, I want a little respect
Now, I get tired, but I keep on tryin'
Runnin' out of foolin', I ain't lyin'
Yes, respect, all I need is respect

All I want, ooh yeah, I want little respect
Yeah, baby, a little respect
Oh honey, sock it to me
[Incomprehensible]
Ooh, I want a little respect

How about "The Hunter Catches the Game" by Smokey, but performed by The Marvelettes.

Everyday brings change, and the world puts on a new face
Sudden things rearrange, and this whole world seems like a new place
Secretly i been tailing you
Like a fox that prays on a rabbitt
Had to get you and so i knew
I had to learn your ways and habits
Ooooooh, you were the catch that i was after
I looked up and i was in your arms and i knew that i was captured

What's this whole world comin to
Things just ain't the same
Any time the hunter gets captured by the game

I had to lay such a tender trap
Hoping you might fall into it
Love hit me with a sudden slap
One kiss and then i knew it
Ooooooh, my plans didn't work out like i thought
'Cause i had laid my trap for you but it seems that i got caught

What's this whole world comin to
Things just ain't the same
Any time the hunter gets captured by the game

Ah yeah, yeah yeah, hey yeah

Oooh. I forgot how hot the Massive Attack version is:

Why try so hard to Americanize it? Why give in to their ignorance?

Because I am running a business here and I need people to like/understand/accept what they see.
