so I decided to make a mock up of

can't remember if I mentioned it before... but... it's been lying around - and I had been thinking to make a matching bra top to go with the gold pants.  Pattern is absolutely ancient.  ($1.50??? - got to be from the 60's or 70's)

I had just enough black cotton lying around.  The mock up turned out okay - Had to make some adjustments.  Extra dart in the upper bust. and take it in a good inch or two in the centre....

but I really don't like it...

because the strap ties behind my neck.  I hate straps that cross the top of the neck - it's like I have a point in my spine that says... don't touch me here. - oh well - I tried loosening it off- I tried just pinning it so there would be no knot there but... it just feels like it pinches the spine.  So that would hardly be good for dancing in.  I wonder how extend the straps in order to modify it into X back....

You could try and adjust it into an x back but adding strips and pinning at the right angle. What about a Y-back? I love the look of halters but really hate the pressure on the back of my neck. My bust isn't exactly light either, it just pushes my head forward!

I thought about doing a Y- back but... I want to preserve the adjustablity of the rib cage band. So instead I'm thinking to cross the straps really close to the top to preserve the halter look and stitching the X. Narrows the neck opening but I think I can live with it.

I don't understand how people with much larger busts can stand to wear halter styles (especially with the weight of some of those coin bras!)
