Jan. 1st, 2010 11:15 amfound out what had the dog all worked up last night ...
it wasn't the random harp music or bird noises in the harry potter dvd.
fireworks.
some JACKASS lit up about 15 minutes of boomers and screamers at midnight.
Thanks jerk.
I *WAS* sound asleep and then had to spend a half hour calming the dog down so that she would stop crying and shaking. And that was AFTER I gave her a doggie valium.
p.s. Happy New Year.

Date: 2010-01-01 07:47 pm (UTC)If we know people are going to be setting off fireworks we take a drive somewhere there will not be fireworks. Out in the country, nearby towns that kind of thing. But no one has ever set off fireworks for new years before - here anyway. UGH. Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day. Random frick'n summer day - whenever they bloody feel like it Day. I have talked to our neighbours & one of them does tell me when they are having fireworks but for the most part I have to guess.
I *hate* fireworks. This all started when she was young & out in the back yard one night and one of our neighbours set off fireworks right over head. Scared the crap out of her and since then... yep - we go through this every time.
At least she isn't trying to climb furniture anymore. She once tried to get over & behind the washing machine & once tried to climb the bathroom counter and crawl into the mirror. Now she just shakes & cries but at least she does it in our bedroom. That's the problem when you have a really smart dog - they have great memories. For both the good & the bad.

Date: 2010-01-02 12:45 am (UTC)Almost every cat I've had has been at least somewhat freaked out by fireworks, thunder, and the all-frightening vacuum cleaner (except my first cat who was all white and deaf). I had a tabby cat years ago, Lucky, who was attacked by a dog when he was a kitten. He could sense a dog outside from at least 50 feet away, even with all the doors closed. He'd growl and raise his hackles and sometimes start shaking and nearly salivating, like he couldn't decide if he wanted to kill it or was just scared to death of it. Never got over it.
There's probably no way to keep people from shooting off fireworks, unfortunately. :\
